The Government of Lesotho today announced the establishment of the Lesotho Office of Government Efficiency (LOGE), a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to streamlining public services, eliminating wasteful expenditures, and strengthening fiscal management across all government sectors.

The LOGE will focus on comprehensive performance audits of government agencies, streamlining regulatory processes, leveraging technology solutions to reduce bureaucracy, and optimizing government procurement and contracting processes.

Addressing Lesotho's Unique Economic Challenges

With a population of over 2.4 million and significant development needs, Lesotho faces the challenge of balancing fiscal responsibility with essential service delivery. The Lesotho Office of Government Efficiency will particularly address identifying and eliminating redundant government programs and services, improving the efficiency of state-owned enterprises, reducing administrative barriers that hinder economic growth, and ensuring transparent allocation of resources based on performance indicators.

The Prime Minister emphasized that "Lesotho could rethink the State's role in the economy to avoid creating an uneven playing field. Policy options include divestiture to delegate key functions to the private sector and improving SOE governance and efficiency."

The establishment of LOGE is expected to deliver substantial benefits, including significant cost savings through reduced administrative waste, improved public service delivery through streamlined processes, enhanced transparency and accountability in government spending, better allocation of resources to priority development areas, and increased efficiency in cross-border trade facilitation.

Implementation Timeline and Structure

Implementation will occur in three phases over the next 24 months. Phase 1 covers institutional establishment and baseline assessment over the first six months. Phase 3 focuses on implementation of reforms and ongoing monitoring over the final six months.
